guitarleaves Introducing – Grouplove

M_Grouplove_09062013Grouplove was featured in yesterday’s hottest gigs post, although they’re so darned good they’re getting their own feature, too. Just look at how cool their picture is. The five-piece Manhattan-germinating group define themselves as rock, but I’d argue it’s alternative rock – I’m not a huge fan of rock, but I am of Grouplove. With Hannah, Christian, Sean, Andrew and Ryan playing up to two instruments each it’s a miracle their tracks are as clear and catchy as they are. I urge you to see them live, and you’ll see why guitarleaves has such big love, for Grouplove.

Watch their (inspiring, but completely politically-incocrrect) video for “Ways to Go”:

Song of the Day – Patterns

20131006-122115-205455

Say hello to “Patterns”, a mega-song from Tourist featuring Lianne La Havas. With strong vocals (not dissimilar to Miss. Jessie Ware) and a nice bit of gospel backing, Tourist (London-based producer William Phillips) has really outdone himself, adding electronic textures to a relaxing melody perfect for the Summer. If you like “Patterns”, then check out Tourist’s latest EP of the same name.

Hottest Upcoming Gigs

Here at guitarleaves we love nothing more than going out to see artists in their natural habitat – screaming into a microphone and dancing round the stage dripping sweat. Doesn’t that sound nice?

We’ve scoured the music industry for you and cherry-picked the best upcoming concerts. Let us know if you go to them!

Song of the Day – From Eden

a_3x-horizontalWho’s heard of Hozier? If you have then you’ll understand why we’re addicted to his songs so much. Irish-born Andrew Hozier-Byrne truly has written a masterpiece in  “From Eden”. Simple melodies combined with husky undertones make this record special, although over-listening may result in spontaneous roadtrips. And even better, though it doesn’t affect the song in the slightest, we really like the graphics on the video. Who says we’re just a music blog? Big respect, Hozier.

guitarleaves Introducing – Chasing Grace

qZgugIhJ  We’re so so pleased to be able to feature “Chasing Grace” on guitarleaves. Made of four school friends from Hertfordshire (Phil, Grace, Phil and Matt) I was first introduced to them at a Naughty Boy concert last year, in which they feature on the album. Though still under the radar, we love their music and Fearne Cotton has played them a lot on her Radio 1 show. They’ve just released their latest single “Run” – my favourite song from their set. It’s such an uplifting song and blends violin melodies with contemporary beats. Take a look at the video:

McBusted Review – 05/05/2014

mcbusted

Perhaps the biggest thing to happen to pop rock in the 21st century is the formation of “supergroup” McBusted – comprising of McFly and Busted (although Charlie Simpson hasn’t joined the band in order to pursue his solo career – anyone heard of it?) Originally planning to do 11 shows, fast ticket sales resulted in the group performing 34 shows in their huge arena tour. I was invited to see them at Sheffield Motorpoint Arena, and having spent my childhood through a music phase of softcore punk listening only to McFly I had high hopes. I hadn’t listened to them in a while, however, and I’ve never been a huge fan of Busted.

Support acts were interesting: Young Brando; E of E and The 3 Dudes (who I think have a combined age nearing just 30?) but a few boos from the crowd confirmed the bands’ popularities.

McBusted made it for it, however, by entering the stage in a Back-to-the-Future-esque entrance, with Busted members flying onto the stage in that car in a load of smoke, and McFly shooting through trapdoors whilst pyrotechnics exploded everywhere.

They played a combination of the two bands’ greatest hits whilst the crowd went crazy – needless to say certain items of underwear reached the stage.

Midway through the concert, after the group left the stage temporarily and TV screens showed them reporting alien activity, they descended into the arena on an enormous floating spaceship. After doing a few songs on it midair, they ran though the crowd back onto the stage where a huge flaming ‘McBusted’ sign had appeared. Huge yoga balls made their way into the crowd during Busted’s “What I Go to School For” and the concert was rounding off by “Year 3000”, in which the nipples of a triple-breasted inflatable prop exploded with streamers. The band then left the stage by jumping through a huge hole in the flooring through which the flaming sign had risen.

The term “supergroup” certainly wasn’t a lie, and though I couldn’t hear properly for the next week, it was a great concert. It didn’t make the slightest difference not knowing many of Busted’s songs – the nostalgia of both groups and the incredible staging of it made for an unforgettable night. It doesn’t matter what taste in music you have, every single person in the arena came away buzzing, and I think that’s where McBusted’s success lies.

Artist of the Week – The Octopus Project

the_octopus_project_crop

Meet ‘The Octopus Project’ – a four-piece group making “psychedelic pop” from Texas. Active since 1999, The Octopus Project creates its unique sound by blending acoustic and electronic instruments, from theremins to guitars. Currently on a UK tour (details of which can be found here: http://www.songkick.com/artists/300530-octopus-project) Josh, Toto, Yvonne and Ryan are playing intimate venues before jetting back off to the US of A. Think Fleetwood Mac meets UFOs.

Check out our favourite single of theirs “Sharpteeth”.
