Song of the Day – Young Chasers

Circa Waves - Radar LeadToday’s Song of the Day is brought to you with perfect timing in the midst of Summer. Liverpool quartet Circa Waves seem to have a very distinct sound of early indie rock and as a result have been taking the alternative music scene by swarm . Surprisingly though, the origins of Circa Waves haven’t been as easy as their current success, with frontman Kieran starting the band as a last resort before giving up of music and resuming a more failsafe career somewhere else. Thankfully his move paid off and it appears that they’ll be sticking around for a while. Have a listen to their recent single “Young Chasers”, and if you like what you hear then go and see them on their upcoming UK tour this Winter. We doubt you’ll be disappointed!

Song of the Day – Traps

years-and-years-580x348From ‘soulful electronic pop’ trio Years & Years comes the record “Traps”. Intrigue springs to mind for me – curiosity into what genre the song fits into, wondering who skilfully sings the androgynous vocals and where the inspiration came from. Of course all of these questions have simple answers, but where is the fun in that? That’s what’s so wonderful about Years & Years: Ollie, Michael and Emre have a fresh taste on the music scene; a palette cleanser and a unique brand. Basically a fast track pass onto guitarleaves.

Song of the Day – Tough Love

jessie-ware-interviewJessie Ware is no newcomer to the world of alternative music. Finding particular success with the song “Wildest Moments” in 2012, she has burst back onto the scene with “Tough Love”. Representing every aspect of her music – chilling vocals, obscure backing music and uplifting harmonies – we are delighted to feature the song on guitarleaves. We also feel we should add that she is a close friend of the legendary Sam Smith, so (hopefully) a few collaborations could be on the way? Well, we can only pray.

Song of the Day – Walking With Elephants

Ten-WallsI’ll be honest and admit that I’m not a fan of electronic music or EDM. Synthetic keyboards and mixers just don’t do it for me in the same way as acoustic talent combined with software. When the computer is the focus, my enthusiasm disappears. Having said that, however, today’s Song of the Day hasn’t come within a ten mile radius of an instrument. Techno producer Ten Walls has come up with “Walking With Elephants”, an understated record that leaves a lot the imagination – precisely the cause of our intrigue. Have a listen and let us know at guitarleaves what it brought to your mind

Song of the Day – Home

Naughty-Boy-Home-ft.-Sam-Romans-01It’s a rare occasion when a particular emotion is encompassed so perfectly by a song to the point where you stop what you’re doing and truly listen. Cue Naughty Boy – already a chart-topping success in the industry – to achieve this, along with vocals from the soulful Sam Romans. The record perfectly combines melodies and layers to convey a sense of raw and unpolluted hope, and I believe it is the suggestion of this that makes the song so powerful. After all, what is life without a little hope?

Song of the Day – Youth

ben-khan-900x540A relative newcomer to the music scene, Ben Khan has really made a positive impact on us with his single “Youth”. Not his first release, but the song is so fresh and interesting we had to feature it. Lyrically “Youth” is simple, but the synthetic-tribal undertones of the record give it its characteristic flavour – something quite important seen as though Ben shies away from media attention and interviews, with the idea that his music speaks for himself. If you like “Youth”, then be sure to check out his EP “1992”, from which the record is taken.

Artist of the Week’s Song of the Day – Sedated

Photo By Debbie Hickey www.debbiehickey.comIt’s that time of the week again – and this time it’s the turn of Hozier with his second single “Sedated”. It’s hard to create a formula for Hozier’s music, with each track of his supporting different styles to the last. Perhaps it could be said that his gritty vocals are the star of his music, backed up by simple melodies and instrumentals. Either way though each record is emotive and proves a point – something that can be very powerful when executed perfectly, and in the case of Hozier, it is.

Song of the Day – Recover

418142865445f67ebbb1ae9534bc7496Well if it isn’t good old electronic group Chvrches supplying today’s Song of the Day. Artfully layering simple vocals over synthesised backing tracks, the Scottish trio have had a run of hits on the alternative music chart since their formation in 2011. Hitting festivals this Summer across Europe once they’ve wrapped their American tour, there are many chance for you to see them, along with their Song of the Day “Recover”.

Song of the Day – Cucurucu

p01tbd0nWe are delighted to announce the Song of the Day comes from Nick Mulvey with “Cucurucu”. The song has two possible sources of inspiration – the Italian Theatre “commedia dell’arte” in which Cucurucu is a character, or a play on words of the rooster’s cry. Nevertheless the video has undertones of Asian village life and the lyrics have a strong sense of family and tradition – themes fundamental to Nick Mulvey’s music.

Song of the Day – Gooey

2013GlassAnimals_Pr180613Glass Animals are a very exciting band. Consisting of Dave, Drew, Edmund and Joe they produce psychedelic, alternative music in a blanket-adorned studio they call “The Shed”. I have so much admiration for this band – mainly because they are so out there and eccentric. Prior to Glass Animals, the band identified themselves as “Alligator Puffin Chicken Go Yeh Woo” and when asked to summarise their music in three words, they responded with “occult bunny lagoon”. The lead singer of the group studied neuroscience and as such was familiar with the psychiatric ward – something I’m sure the unicorn-loving band took as inspiration. Take a listen to “Gooey”, and if you like it be sure to pre-order their upcoming debut album “Zaba” – I certainly have!
